Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 18670, It is the 40th most populous county in the U.S. state of Arkansas. It has total area of 835.65 mi˛ (2164.32 sq km), of which, 828.18 square miles (2144.98 sq km) of it is land and 7.47 square miles (19.35 sq km) of it is water, it is the 14th largest by area in the U.S. state of Arkansas.

For every 100 males there were 106.2 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 109.3 females. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 18670, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 13102 White, 5251 Black or African American, 48 American Indian, 84 Asian, 3 Native Hawaiian, and 182 from two or more races.
