Douglas County is a county located in South Dakota, in the Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. According to the latest population census dating back to 2000, the Douglas County is home to 3458 inhabitants. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 2945, It is the 20th smallest county by population in the U.S. state of South Dakota. The county spans an area of 434.13 miē (1124.39 kmē), of which, 433.53 square miles (1122.84 kmē) of it is land and 0.6 square miles (1.55 kmē) of it is water, it is the second smallest by area in the U.S. state of South Dakota.

The population density was 8 people per square mile (3.09/kmē), making it the 25th most densely populated county in South Dakota. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 27.7% under the age of 18, 4.9% from 18 to 24, 22.4% from 25 to 44, 22.4% from 45 to 64, and 22.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 95.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.3 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 2945, The racial makeup of the county was 97.62% White, 0.07% Black or African American, 1.49% American Indian, 0.14% Asian, 0% Native Hawaiian, and 0.68% from two or more races.
