Its population was estimated at 502032 in July 2008, making it the most populous county in Nebraska. The county spans an area of 339.6 mi˛ (879.56 sq km), of which, 330.98 square miles (857.23 sq km) of it is land and 8.62 square miles (22.33 sq km) of it is water, giving it the third smallest by total area among Nebraska's county.

In the county the population was spread out, with 26.6% under the age of 18, 10.3% from 18 to 24, 31.2% from 25 to 44, 21% from 45 to 64, and 11% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 95.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.9 males. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 502032, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 83.17% White, 11.7% Black or African American, 0.79% American Indian, 2.55% Asian, 0.11% Native Hawaiian, and 1.68% from two or more races.
