Dorchester County, South Carolina is a county located in the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 96413 inhabitants. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 127133, making it the 13th most populous county in South Carolina. Its area is just over 576.69 sq mi (1493.62 sq km), of which, 574.73 square miles (1488.54 sq km) of it is land and 1.96 square miles (5.08 sq km) of it is water, giving it the 27th largest by total area among South Carolina's county.

The population density was 167.8 people per square mile (64.79/kmē), making its South Carolina's 11th most densely populated county. There were 37237 housing units at an average density of 64.8 per square mile (25.02/kmē). The average household size was 2.72 and the average family size was 3.13. In the county the population was spread out, with 28.9% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 31.6% from 25 to 44, 22.6% from 45 to 64, and 9.1% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 95.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.7 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 127133, The racial makeup of the county was 90037 White, 32343 Black or African American, 828 American Indian, 1934 Asian, 122 Native Hawaiian, and 1869 from two or more races.
