Dorchester County is a county in the United States of Maryland. The population of the county was 30674 as per the 2000 census data. Its population was estimated at 31998 in July 2008, It is the fourth smallest county by population in the U.S. state of Maryland. It is spread over 982.92 sq mi (2545.75 square kilometre), of which, 557.54 square miles (1444.02 square kilometre ) of it is land and 425.38 square miles (1101.73 square kilometre) of it is water, makes it the largest by total area in Maryland. It is ranks first in the size of its inland waterways in Maryland.

According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 30674 people, 12706 households, and 8506 families residing in the county. The population density was 55 people per square mile (21.24/kmē), giving it the second least densely populated county among the Maryland. There were 14681 housing units at an average density of 26.3 per square mile (10.15/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.36 persons, and the average family size was 2.86 persons. The population's age distribution was 23.3% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 26.8% from 25 to 44, 25.5% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 89.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.4 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 31998, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 22519 White, 8805 Black or African American, 75 American Indian, 319 Asian, 1 Native Hawaiian, and 279 from two or more races.
