Its population was estimated at 7201 in July 2008, It is West Virginia's fifth least populous county. The county encompasses an area of 320.48 miē (830.04 kmē ), of which, 320.43 square miles (829.91 kmē) of it is land and 0.05 square miles (0.13 kmē) of it is water, makes it the 14th smallest by total area in West Virginia.

In the county the population is diverse age-wise, with 25% under the age of 18, 8.4% from 18 to 24, 26.6% from 25 to 44, 25.1% from 45 to 64, and 14.8% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 101.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 98.1 males. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 7201, The racial makeup of the county was 7077 White, 25 Black or African American, 22 American Indian, 11 Asian, 0 Native Hawaiian, and 66 from two or more races.
