Dewitt County is one of the 254 county of Texas, located towards the Southern Region (West South Central) of United States. As of 2000 the population was 20013. In July 2008, its estimated population was 19596, It is the 119th largest in terms of population. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 910.47 sq mi (2358.11 kmē), of which, 909.18 square miles (2354.77 kmē) of it is land and 1.29 square miles (3.34 kmē) of it is water, makes it the 143rd largest by total area in Texas.


As of the census of 2000, there were 20013 people in the county, organized into 7207 households, and 5132 families living in the county. The population density was 22 people per square mile (8.49/kmē), it is the 124th most populated county in terms of population density. There were 8756 housing units at an average density of 9.6 per square mile (3.71/kmē). The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 3.04. In the county the population was spread out, with 23.8% under the age of 18, 7% from 18 to 24, 27.1% from 25 to 44, 23.3% from 45 to 64, and 18.9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 105.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 105.2 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 19596, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 86.5% White, 11.7% Black or African American, 0.64% American Indian, 0.31% Asian, 0.06% Native Hawaiian, and 0.8% from two or more races.
