Dewey County is a one of the county from South Dakota's 66 counties, located in Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. As of 2000 the population was 5972. Its population was estimated at 5931 in July 2008, It is the 29th largest in terms of population. The county extends throughout a territory of 2445.67 square miles (6334.26 sq km ), of which, 2302.64 square miles (5963.81 sq km) of it is land and 143.03 square miles (370.45 sq km) of it is water, giving it the sixth largest by total area among South Dakota's county. It is ranks first in the size of its inland waterways in South Dakota.

As of the census of 2000, there were 5972 people, 1863 households, and 1387 families residing in the county. The population density was 2.6 people per square mile (1/kmē), giving it the 15th least densely populated county among the South Dakota. There were 2133 housing units at an average density of 0.9 per square mile (0.35/kmē). It has an average household size was 3.15 persons, and the average family size was 3.66 persons. In the Dewey County, 38.9% of the population was under the age of 18, 9% were 18 to 24, 27.2% were 25 to 44, 16.6% were 45 to 64, and 8.3% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 95.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95 males. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 5931, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 23.27% White, 0.39% Black or African American, 74.05% American Indian, 0.27% Asian, 0.03% Native Hawaiian, and 1.99% from two or more races.
