Detroit Lakes City is a city in the Becker County, Minnesota, United States. As of 2000 the population was 7348. The city's estimated population as of July 2008 was 8141, making it the 105th most populous in Minnesota. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 12.33 sq mi (31.93 square kilometre), of which, 7.5 square miles (19.42 square kilometre) of it is land and 4.84 square miles (12.54 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 92nd largest by area in the U.S. state of Minnesota. It is ranks 14 in the size of its inland waterways in Minnesota.

As of the census of 2000, there were 7348 residents, 3319 households, and 1847 families in the city. The population density was 980.4 people per square mile (378.53/kmē), it is the 304th most densely populated city in the U.S. state of Minnesota. There were 3782 housing units at an average density of 504.3 per square mile (194.71/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.13 persons, and the average family size was 2.86 persons.
