Detroit City is one of the city of Wayne County, Michigan, located towards the Midwestern Region (East North Central) of United States. The population of city in 2000 stood at 951270 as per the Census data. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 912062, It is the most populous in the U.S. state of Michigan. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 142.95 square miles (370.24 sq km), of which, 138.77 square miles (359.41 sq km) of it is land and 4.18 square miles (10.83 sq km) of it is water, making it the largest by size in Michigan. It is ranks 11 in the size of its inland waterways in Michigan.

According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 951270 residents, 336428 households, and 218483 families in the city. The population density was 6855.1 people per square mile (2646.77/kmē), making its Michigan's second most densely populated city. There were 375096 housing units at an average density of 2703 per square mile (1043.63/kmē). The average household size was 2.77 persons, and the average family size was 3.45 persons. In the city the population was distributed as follows: 31.1% under the age of 18, 9.7% from 18 to 24, 29.5% from 25 to 44, 19.3% from 45 to 64, and 10.4% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 89.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.5 males. The median age of the city's population was 30.9 years, The median age of males was 29.2 years, for females the median age was 32.5 years. The racial or ethnic makeup of the city was 12.26% White, 81.55% Black or African American, 0.33% American Indian, 0.97% Asian, 0.03% Native Hawaiian, 2.32% from two or more races and 2.54% Other races.
