Desoto County is a United States county located in the United States of Florida. As of 2000 the population was 32209. The July 2008 population estimate is 33991, making it the 20th least populous county in Florida. It is spread over 639.5 mi˛ (1656.3 sq km), of which, 637.27 square miles (1650.52 sq km ) of it is land and 2.23 square miles (5.78 sq km) of it is water, giving it the 19th smallest by total area among Florida's county.

As of the census of 2000, there were 32209 people in the county, organized into 10746 households, and 7676 families residing in the county. The population density was 50.5 people per square mile (19.5/km˛), making its Florida's 22nd least densely populated county. There were 13608 housing units at an average density of 21.4 per square mile (8.26/km˛). The average household size was 2.7 persons, and the average family size was 3 persons. In the county the population is diverse age-wise, with 22.7% under the age of 18, 11.2% from 18 to 24, 26.7% from 25 to 44, 20.5% from 45 to 64, and 19% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 128.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 134.7 males. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 33991, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 83.53% White, 11.96% Black or African American, 3% American Indian, 0.52% Asian, 0.13% Native Hawaiian, and 0.85% from two or more races.
