Des Moines County is a United States county located in the United States of Iowa. As of 2000 the population was 42351. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 40629, It is Iowa's 15th most populous county. The county has a total area of 429.8 mi˛ (1113.18 sq km), of which, 416.15 square miles (1077.82 sq km) of it is land and 13.65 square miles (35.35 sq km) of it is water, making it the tenth smallest by size in Iowa.

The population density was 101.8 people per square mile (39.31/km˛), making it the ninth most densely populated county in Iowa. There were 18643 housing units at an average density of 44.8 per square mile (17.3/km˛). The average household size was 2.4 and the average family size was 2.94. Age range in the county was well distributed with 24.4% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 26.1% from 25 to 44, 24.3% from 45 to 64, and 16.7% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 93.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.3 males. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 40629, The racial makeup of the county was 37819 White, 1784 Black or African American, 134 American Indian, 305 Asian, 22 Native Hawaiian, and 565 from two or more races.
