Des Moines City is a one of the Polk County, Iowa, located in Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. Des Moines City had an official population of 198682 in 2000. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 197052, It is the largest in terms of population. It has total area of 77.25 square miles (200.08 kmē), of which, 75.8 square miles (196.32 kmē) of it is land and 1.45 square miles (3.76 kmē) of it is water, it is the largest by area in the U.S. state of Iowa. It is ranks sixth in the size of its inland waterways in Iowa.

As of the census of 2000, there were 198682 people in the city, organized into 80504 households, and 48710 families residing in the city. The population density was 2621.3 people per square mile (1012.09/kmē), it is Iowa's seventh most densely populated city. There were 85067 housing units at an average density of 1122.3 per square mile (433.32/kmē). The average household size was 2.39 persons, and the average family size was 3.04 persons. In the city the population was distributed as follows: 24.8% under the age of 18, 10.6% from 18 to 24, 31.8% from 25 to 44, 20.4% from 45 to 64, and 12.4% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 93.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.5 males. The median age was 33.8 years, the median age of male residents at 32.6 and the median age of female residents at 35.1. The racial makeup of the city was 163494 White, 16025 Black or African American, 705 American Indian, 6946 Asian, 95 Native Hawaiian, 4430 from two or more races and 6987 Ohter races.
