Derby City is a one of the New Haven County, Connecticut, located in Northeastern Region (New England) of United States. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 12391 inhabitants. The city's estimated population as of July 2008 was 12393, making it Connecticut's 34th largest. The city extends throughout a territory of 5.38 square miles (13.93 sq km ), of which, 4.98 square miles (12.9 sq km) of it is land and 0.4 square miles (1.04 sq km) of it is water, making it the 48th largest by size in Connecticut.

As of the census of 2000, there were 12391 people, 5252 households, and 3245 families living in the city. The population density was 2487.6 people per square mile (960.47/kmē), it is the 26th most densely populated city in the U.S. state of Connecticut. There were 5568 housing units at an average density of 1118.1 per square mile (431.7/kmē). The average household size was 2.32 and the average family size was 2.94. The population's age distribution was 21.7% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 33% from 25 to 44, 21.5% from 45 to 64, and 16.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 93.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89 males. The median age of the city's population was 37.7 years, the median age of male residents at 36 and the median age of female residents at 39.5. The racial makeup of the city was 11162 White, 449 Black or African American, 20 American Indian, 215 Asian, 8 Native Hawaiian, 225 from two or more races and 312 Ohter races.
