Its area is just over 455.97 square miles (1180.96 square kilometre), of which, 442.41 square miles (1145.84 square kilometre) of it is land and 13.56 square miles (35.12 square kilometre) of it is water, making it the 47th largest by size in Ohio. It is ranks tenth in the size of its inland waterways in Ohio.

As of the census of 2000, there were 109989 people in the county, organized into 39674 households, and 30658 families residing in the county. The population density was 248.6 people per square mile (95.98/kmē), it is the 22nd most densely populated county in the U.S. state of Ohio. There were 42374 housing units at an average density of 95.8 per square mile (36.99/kmē). The average household size was 2.7 and the average family size was 3.09. In the county the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 32.6% from 25 to 44, 23.3% from 45 to 64, and 8.2% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 102.1 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 105.3 females. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 165026, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 148981 White, 6698 Black or African American, 242 American Indian, 6759 Asian, 49 Native Hawaiian, and 2297 from two or more races.
