Deer Lodge County is a one of the county from Montana's 56 counties, located in Western Region (Mountain) of United States. The county has a population of 9417 as per the 2000 census data. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 8843, giving it the 24th largest population among Montana's county. It is spread over 741.16 square miles (1919.6 sq km), of which, 736.98 square miles (1908.77 sq km ) of it is land and 4.19 square miles (10.85 sq km) of it is water, it is the second smallest by area in the U.S. state of Montana.

As of the census of 2000, there were 9417 residents, 3995 households, and 2526 families in the county. The population density was 12.8 people per square mile (4.94/kmē), it is the tenth most populated county in terms of population density. There were 4958 housing units at an average density of 6.7 per square mile (2.59/kmē). The average household size was 2.26 people, and the average family size was 2.84 people. The population's age distribution was 22.5% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 24% from 25 to 44, 26.8% from 45 to 64, and 18.8% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 99.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.3 males. In July 2008, its estimated population was 8843, The racial makeup of the county was 95.5% White, 0.21% Black or African American, 2.24% American Indian, 0.35% Asian, 0.01% Native Hawaiian, and 1.68% from two or more races.
