Decatur County is a county located in Indiana, in the Midwestern Region (East North Central) of United States. Decatur County had an official population of 24555 in 2000. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 24998, It is Indiana's 62nd most populous county. The county extends throughout a territory of 373.42 miē (967.15 kmē ), of which, 372.6 square miles (965.03 kmē) of it is land and 0.81 square miles (2.1 kmē) of it is water, making it the 29th smallest by size in Indiana.


As of the census of 2000, there were 24555 residents, 9389 households, and 6878 families in the county. The population density was 65.9 people per square mile (25.44/kmē), making its Indiana's 61st most densely populated county. There were 9992 housing units at an average density of 26.8 per square mile (10.35/kmē). The average household size was 2.58 people, and the average family size was 3.03 people. In the county the population is diverse age-wise, with 26.3% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 29.3% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 13.3% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 97.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.4 males. The July 2008 population estimate is 24998, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 24298 White, 117 Black or African American, 30 American Indian, 403 Asian, 3 Native Hawaiian, and 147 from two or more races.
