Decatur County is one of the 159 county of Georgia, located towards the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. In 2000, county's population was 28240 inhabitants. The July 2008 population estimate is 28823, It is the 60th largest in terms of population. It has total area of 623.16 sq mi (1613.98 square kilometre), of which, 596.8 square miles (1545.7 square kilometre) of it is land and 26.36 square miles (68.27 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 13th largest by area in the U.S. state of Georgia. It is ranks ninth in the size of its inland waterways in Georgia.

For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85.9 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 28823, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 58.37% White, 39.88% Black or African American, 0.6% American Indian, 0.34% Asian, 0.04% Native Hawaiian, and 0.75% from two or more races.
