Decatur City is a city located in Morgan and Limestone counties, Alabama, in the Southern Region (East South Central) of United States. As of 2000 the population was 53929. The city's estimated population as of July 2008 was 56068, making it Alabama's eighth largest. The city spans an area of 59.9 sq mi (155.14 square kilometre), of which, 53.41 square miles (138.33 square kilometre) of it is land and 6.49 square miles (16.81 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the tenth largest by area in the U.S. state of Alabama. It is ranks sixth in the size of its inland waterways in Alabama.

According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 53929 people, 21824 households, and 14752 families residing in the city. The population density was 1009.7 people per square mile (389.85/kmē), it is Alabama's 52nd most densely populated city. There were 23950 housing units at an average density of 448.4 per square mile (173.13/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.43 persons, and the average family size was 2.99 persons. In the city the population is diverse age-wise, with 25.4% under the age of 18, 8.8% from 18 to 24, 29.6% from 25 to 44, 23.1% from 45 to 64, and 13.1% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 92.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.5 males. The median age was 36.3 years, the median age of male residents at 35 and the median age of female residents at 37.7. The racial makeup of the city was 40714 White, 10548 Black or African American, 312 American Indian, 376 Asian, 68 Native Hawaiian, 716 from two or more races and 1195 Ohter races.
