Deadwood City is a city located in the Lawrence County, South Dakota, United States. The population of the city was 1380 as per the 2000 census data. Its population was estimated at 1283 in July 2008, It is South Dakota's 50th largest by population . The city comprises an area of 3.78 square miles (9.79 square kilometre), it is the 33rd largest by area in the U.S. state of South Dakota.

As of the census of 2000, there were 1380 people, 669 households, and 342 families residing in the city. The population density was 365.4 people per square mile (141.08/kmē), making its South Dakota's 220th most densely populated city. There were 817 housing units at an average density of 216.1 per square mile (83.44/kmē). The average household size was 2.01 persons, and the average family size was 2.71 persons. In the city the population is diverse age-wise, with 19.3% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 27.3% from 25 to 44, 27.8% from 45 to 64, and 16.8% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 93.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.6 males. The median age was 41.8 years, the median age of male residents at 40.9 and the median age of female residents at 42.6. The racial makeup of the city was 95.87% White, 0% Black or African American, 1.88% American Indian, 0.36% Asian, 0% Native Hawaiian, 1.23% from two or more races and 0.65% Other races.
