De Witt County, Illinois is a county located in the Midwestern Region (East North Central) of United States. In 2000, the population was 16798. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 16354, It is the 32nd least populous county in the U.S. state of Illinois. The county comprises an area of 405.15 miē (1049.33 kmē), of which, 397.58 square miles (1029.73 kmē) of it is land and 7.58 square miles (19.63 kmē) of it is water, it is the 30th smallest by area in the U.S. state of Illinois.

As of the census of 2000, there were 16798 residents, 6770 households, and 4683 families in the county. The population density was 42.3 people per square mile (16.33/kmē), it is the 60th most densely populated county in the U.S. state of Illinois. There were 7282 housing units at an average density of 18.3 per square mile (7.07/kmē). The average household size was 2.44 persons, and the average family size was 2.95 persons. The population's age distribution was 24.6% under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 28.3% from 25 to 44, 23.5% from 45 to 64, and 15.9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 95.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.5 males. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 16354, The racial makeup of the county was 15967 White, 158 Black or African American, 36 American Indian, 60 Asian, 4 Native Hawaiian, and 129 from two or more races.
