De Soto Parish is a parish located in Louisiana, in the Southern Region (West South Central) of United States. The population of parish in 2000 stood at 25494 as per the Census data. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the parish is 26388, It is Louisiana's 36th most populous parish. The parish comprises an area of 894.49 square miles (2316.72 sq km), of which, 877.2 square miles (2271.94 sq km) of it is land and 17.29 square miles (44.78 sq km) of it is water, it is the 20th largest in terms of geographical size.

As of the census of 2000, there were 25494 people in the parish, organized into 9691 households, and 6969 families living in the parish. The population density was 29.1 people per square mile (11.24/kmē), giving it the 18th least densely populated parish among the Louisiana. There were 11204 housing units at an average density of 12.8 per square mile (4.94/kmē). The average household size was 2.6 persons, and the average family size was 3.11 persons. In the parish the population was distributed as follows: 28.4% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 26.3% from 25 to 44, 23% from 45 to 64, and 14.1% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 90.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 26388, The racial or ethnic makeup of the parish was 59% White, 39.43% Black or African American, 0.54% American Indian, 0.13% Asian, 0.05% Native Hawaiian, and 0.85% from two or more races.
