De Smet City is a city in the Kingsbury County, South Dakota, United States. De Smet City had an official population of 1164 in 2000. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the city is 1051, making it the 64th most populous in South Dakota. The city has a total area of 1.06 sq mi (2.75 kmē), making it South Dakota's 110th largest by total area.

As of the census of 2000, there were 1164 residents, 524 households, and 300 families in the city. The population density was 1102.2 people per square mile (425.56/kmē), it is South Dakota's 83rd most densely populated city. There were 582 housing units at an average density of 549.1 per square mile (212.01/kmē). The average household size was 2.09 persons, and the average family size was 2.8 persons. In the city the population was distributed as follows: 20.8% under the age of 18, 6% from 18 to 24, 21.1% from 25 to 44, 20.8% from 45 to 64, and 31.3% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 89 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87 males. The median age is 46.8 years, the median age of male residents at 43.2 and the median age of female residents at 50.3. The racial or ethnic makeup of the city was 98.37% White, 0% Black or African American, 0.95% American Indian, 0.09% Asian, 0% Native Hawaiian, 0.52% from two or more races and 0.09% Other races.
