The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 13692, It is Texas's 145th most populous county. The county encompasses an area of 902.12 sq mi (2336.48 square kilometre ), of which, 902.06 square miles (2336.32 square kilometre) of it is land and 0.06 square miles (0.16 square kilometre) of it is water, making it the 156th largest by size in Texas.


As of the census of 2000, there were 14985 residents, 4726 households, and 3503 families in the county. The population density was 16.6 people per square mile (6.41/kmē), it is 146th most densely populated county in Texas. In the county the population was spread out, with 25.6% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 30.7% from 25 to 44, 20.5% from 45 to 64, and 14.3% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 80.4 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 77 females.
