The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 40971, It is North Carolina's 61st most populous county. The county encompasses an area of 266.89 mi˛ (691.24 square kilometre ), of which, 265.18 square miles (686.81 square kilometre) of it is land and 1.7 square miles (4.4 square kilometre) of it is water, making it North Carolina's tenth smallest county by total area.
