Dauphin County is a one of the county from Pennsylvania's 67 counties, located in Northeastern Region (Mid-Atlantic) of United States. The county has a population of 251798 as per the 2000 census data. The July 2008 population estimate is 256562, It is the 15th most populous county in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 557.53 mi˛ (1444 square kilometre), of which, 525.29 square miles (1360.49 square kilometre) of it is land and 32.24 square miles (83.5 square kilometre) of it is water, giving it the 41st largest by total area among Pennsylvania's county. It is ranks third in the size of its inland waterways in Pennsylvania.

As of the census of 2000, there were 251798 residents, 102670 households, and 66132 families in the county. The population density was 479.4 people per square mile (185.1/km˛), giving it the tenth most densely populated county among the Pennsylvania. There were 111133 housing units at an average density of 211.6 per square mile (81.7/km˛). The average household size was 2.39 persons, and the average family size was 2.98 persons. The population's age distribution was 24.3% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 30.1% from 25 to 44, 23.8% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 92.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.8 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 256562, The racial makeup of the county was 198926 White, 45311 Black or African American, 585 American Indian, 6777 Asian, 129 Native Hawaiian, and 4834 from two or more races.
