Dakota County is a United States county located in the United States of Nebraska. The population of the county was 20253 as per the 2000 census data. In July 2008, its estimated population was 20174, making it the 15th most populous county in Nebraska. It has total area of 267.39 mi˛ (692.54 sq km), of which, 263.8 square miles (683.24 sq km) of it is land and 3.6 square miles (9.32 sq km) of it is water, giving it the second smallest by total area among Nebraska's county.

The population density was 76.8 people per square mile (29.65/km˛), it is the fifth most densely populated county in the U.S. state of Nebraska. In the county the population was spread out, with 30.5% under the age of 18, 10.1% from 18 to 24, 29.4% from 25 to 44, 20.1% from 45 to 64, and 9.9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 100.3 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 103 females. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 20174, The racial makeup of the county was 18176 White, 406 Black or African American, 561 American Indian, 733 Asian, 15 Native Hawaiian, and 283 from two or more races.
