Dakota County is one of the 87 county of Minnesota, located towards the Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. It is home to over 355904 people (2000 census). In July 2008, its estimated population was 392755, making it the third most populous county in Minnesota. The county spans an area of 586.33 sq mi (1518.59 square kilometre), of which, 569.58 square miles (1475.21 square kilometre) of it is land and 16.75 square miles (43.38 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 57th largest in terms of geographical size.

The population density was 624.9 people per square mile (241.28/kmē), it is the fourth most populated county in terms of population density. There were 133750 housing units at an average density of 234.8 per square mile (90.66/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.7 persons, and the average family size was 3.19 persons.
