Custer County is a United States county located in the United States of South Dakota. As per the 2000 census, county has a population of 7275 inhabitants. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 7811, It is the 22nd largest county by population in the U.S. state of South Dakota. It has total area of 1559.14 square miles (4038.15 square kilometre), of which, 1557.69 square miles (4034.4 square kilometre) of it is land and 1.45 square miles (3.76 square kilometre) of it is water, making it South Dakota's 16th largest county by total area.

As of the census of 2000, there were 7275 residents, 2970 households, and 2068 families in the county. The population density was 4.7 people per square mile (1.81/kmē), making its South Dakota's 37th most densely populated county. There were 3624 housing units at an average density of 2.3 per square mile (0.89/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.35 persons, and the average family size was 2.8 persons. In the county the population was spread out, with 24.1% under the age of 18, 6.3% from 18 to 24, 22.4% from 25 to 44, 31.1% from 45 to 64, and 16% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 95.8 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 100.6 females. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 7811, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 7337 White, 22 Black or African American, 297 American Indian, 14 Asian, 1 Native Hawaiian, and 140 from two or more races.
