Custer County, Montana is a county located in the Western Region (Mountain) of United States. In 2000, county's population was 11696 inhabitants. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 11149, It is the 17th largest county by population in the U.S. state of Montana. It is spread over 3793.22 mi˛ (9824.39 square kilometre), of which, 3783.13 square miles (9798.26 square kilometre ) of it is land and 10.09 square miles (26.13 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 11th largest in terms of geographical size.

As of the census of 2000, there were 11696 residents, 4768 households, and 3092 families in the county. The population density was 3.1 people per square mile (1.2/km˛), making its Montana's 25th most densely populated county. There were 5360 housing units at an average density of 1.4 per square mile (0.54/km˛). It has an average household size was 2.36 persons, and the average family size was 2.94 persons. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 25.1% under the age of 18, 8.4% from 18 to 24, 25.6% from 25 to 44, 23.8% from 45 to 64, and 17.1% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 95.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males. Its population was estimated at 11149 in July 2008, The racial makeup of the county was 10767 White, 16 Black or African American, 199 American Indian, 29 Asian, 7 Native Hawaiian, and 131 from two or more races.
