Custer County is one of the 63 county of Colorado, located towards the Western Region (Mountain) of United States. The population of the county was 3503 as per the 2000 census data. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 3999, It is the tenth smallest in terms of population. The county extends throughout a territory of 739.9 mi˛ (1916.33 square kilometre ), of which, 738.89 square miles (1913.72 square kilometre) of it is land and 1.02 square miles (2.64 square kilometre) of it is water, giving it the 12th smallest by total area among Colorado's county.

As of the census of 2000, there were 3503 people in the county, organized into 1480 households, and 1078 families residing in the county. The population density was 4.7 people per square mile (1.81/km˛), it is Colorado's 20th least densely populated county. There were 2989 housing units at an average density of 4 per square mile (1.54/km˛). The average household size was 2.36 people, and the average family size was 2.77 people. In the county Age distribution was 22.5% under the age of 18, 4.5% from 18 to 24, 23.3% from 25 to 44, 35% from 45 to 64, and 14.8% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 104.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 102 males. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 3999, The racial makeup of the county was 97.05% White, 0.35% Black or African American, 1.08% American Indian, 0.4% Asian, 0% Native Hawaiian, and 1.13% from two or more races.
