Cumberland County is a county located in Virginia, in the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. In 2000, county's population was 9017 inhabitants. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 9670, It is 20th least populous county in Virginia. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 299.73 sq mi (776.3 square kilometre), of which, 298.45 square miles (772.98 square kilometre) of it is land and 1.28 square miles (3.32 square kilometre) of it is water, makes it the 71st largest by total area in Virginia.

As of the census of 2000, there were 9017 people in the county, organized into 3528 households, and 2488 families residing in the county. The population density was 30.2 people per square mile (11.66/kmē), it is 13th least densely populated county in Virginia. There were 4085 housing units at an average density of 13.7 per square mile (5.29/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.55 persons, and the average family size was 3.03 persons. In the county the population was spread out, with 24.7% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 28% from 25 to 44, 25.1% from 45 to 64, and 14.8% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 91 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males. In July 2008, its estimated population was 9670, The racial makeup of the county was 6190 White, 3283 Black or African American, 21 American Indian, 65 Asian, 0 Native Hawaiian, and 111 from two or more races.
