Cumberland County, North Carolina is a county of the United States of North Carolina. Cumberland County had an official population of 302963 in 2000. The July 2008 population estimate is 312696, making it North Carolina's fifth largest county. The county spans an area of 658.46 mi˛ (1705.4 square kilometre), of which, 652.72 square miles (1690.54 square kilometre) of it is land and 5.74 square miles (14.87 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 23rd largest by area in the U.S. state of North Carolina.

The population density was 464.2 people per square mile (179.23/km˛), it is eighth most densely populated county in North Carolina. There were 118425 housing units at an average density of 181.4 per square mile (70.04/km˛). It has an average household size was 2.65 persons, and the average family size was 3.11 persons. In the county the population was spread out, with 27.9% under the age of 18, 13.7% from 18 to 24, 32.9% from 25 to 44, 17.8% from 45 to 64, and 7.7% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 97.7 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 98.2 females. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 312696, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 56.13% White, 37.05% Black or African American, 1.6% American Indian, 2.11% Asian, 0.29% Native Hawaiian, and 2.81% from two or more races.
