Cumberland City is a city located in Harlan County, Kentucky, in the Southern Region (East South Central) of United States. It is home to over 2611 people (2000 census). As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 2352, It is 137th most populous in Kentucky. It covers total area of 4.59 square miles (11.89 sq km), of which, 4.58 square miles (11.86 sq km) of it is land and 0.01 square miles (0.03 sq km) of it is water, giving it the 93rd largest by total area among Kentucky.

As of the census of 2000, there were 2611 people in the city, organized into 1076 households, and 723 families residing in the city. The population density was 570.5 people per square mile (220.27/kmē), making it the 96th least densely populated city in Kentucky. There were 1288 housing units at an average density of 281.2 per square mile (108.57/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.35 persons, and the average family size was 2.95 persons. In the Cumberland City, 25.5% of the population was under the age of 18, 9.2% were 18 to 24, 25.5% were 25 to 44, 22.1% were 45 to 64, and 17.7% who were 65 or older.
