Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 15295, It is the 40th largest by population in the U.S. state of Alabama. Its area is just over 19.15 square miles (49.6 sq km), of which, 18.3 square miles (47.4 sq km) of it is land and 0.86 square miles (2.23 sq km) of it is water, giving it the 51st largest by total area among Alabama. It is ranks 20 in the size of its inland waterways in Alabama.
