Crenshaw County is one of the 67 county of Alabama, located towards the Southern Region (East South Central) of United States. Crenshaw County had an official population of 13665 in 2000. Its population was estimated at 13754 in July 2008, It is the ninth smallest county by population in the U.S. state of Alabama. The county has a total area of 610.88 miē (1582.17 kmē), of which, 609.58 square miles (1578.8 kmē) of it is land and 1.3 square miles (3.37 kmē) of it is water, making it the 15th smallest by size in Alabama.

As of the census of 2000, there were 13665 residents, 5577 households, and 3891 families in the county. The population density was 22.4 people per square mile (8.65/kmē), it is 11th least densely populated county in Alabama. There were 6644 housing units at an average density of 10.9 per square mile (4.21/kmē). The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 2.96. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 24.7% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 26.3% from 25 to 44, 23.9% from 45 to 64, and 17.1% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 89.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.6 males. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 13754, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 73.07% White, 25.37% Black or African American, 0.45% American Indian, 0.13% Asian, 0.01% Native Hawaiian, and 0.97% from two or more races.
