Crane County is a county located in Texas, in the Southern Region (West South Central) of United States. The population of the county was 3996 as per the 2000 census data. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 4017, making it Texas's 47th smallest county. The county encompasses an area of 785.59 square miles (2034.67 kmē ), of which, 785.56 square miles (2034.59 kmē) of it is land and 0.03 square miles (0.08 kmē) of it is water, it is the 47th smallest by area in the U.S. state of Texas.

As of the census of 2000, there were 3996 people, 1360 households, and 1083 families living in the county. The population density was 5.1 people per square mile (1.97/kmē), it is the 56th least populated county in terms of population density. There were 1596 housing units at an average density of 2 per square mile (0.77/kmē). The average household size was 2.91 people, and the average family size was 3.35 people. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 31.9% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 26.9% from 25 to 44, 22.6% from 45 to 64, and 10.9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 94.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.5 males. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 4017, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 94.22% White, 3.71% Black or African American, 1.42% American Indian, 0.35% Asian, 0% Native Hawaiian, and 0.3% from two or more races.
