Covington County is a county located in Alabama, in the Southern Region (East South Central) of United States. The population of the county was 37631 as per the 2000 census data. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 36856, It is the 33rd largest county by population in the U.S. state of Alabama. It is spread over 1043.86 square miles (2703.58 kmē), of which, 1033.82 square miles (2677.58 kmē ) of it is land and 10.05 square miles (26.03 kmē) of it is water, it is the eighth largest by area in the U.S. state of Alabama.

The population density was 36.4 people per square mile (14.05/kmē), it is the 43rd most densely populated county in the U.S. state of Alabama. In the county the population was spread out, with 23.5% under the age of 18, 8.1% from 18 to 24, 26.1% from 25 to 44, 24.3% from 45 to 64, and 17.9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 91.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88 males. The July 2008 population estimate is 36856, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 85.17% White, 13.08% Black or African American, 0.6% American Indian, 0.29% Asian, 0.01% Native Hawaiian, and 0.83% from two or more races.
