In July 2008, its estimated population was 72654, giving it the 49th largest population among Texas's county. It has total area of 1056.73 mi˛ (2736.92 square kilometre), of which, 1051.76 square miles (2724.05 square kilometre) of it is land and 4.97 square miles (12.87 square kilometre) of it is water, making it Texas's 72nd largest county by total area.
