Cortez City is one of the city of Montezuma County, Colorado, located towards the Western Region (Mountain) of United States. According to the latest population census dating back to 2000, the Cortez City is home to 7977 inhabitants. Its population was estimated at 8609 in July 2008, It is the 60th largest by population in the U.S. state of Colorado. The city comprises an area of 5.52 sq mi (14.3 sq km), of which, 5.5 square miles (14.24 sq km) of it is land and 0.02 square miles (0.05 sq km) of it is water, making it Colorado's 86th largest by total area.

As of the census of 2000, there were 7977 people, 3209 households, and 2080 families living in the city. The population density was 1449.9 people per square mile (559.81/kmē), it is the 123rd most densely populated city in the U.S. state of Colorado. There were 3508 housing units at an average density of 637.8 per square mile (246.26/kmē). The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 3. In the city the population was spread out, with 26.7% under the age of 18, 8.8% from 18 to 24, 26.6% from 25 to 44, 21.6% from 45 to 64, and 16.4% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 109.4 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 118.5 females. The median age was 36.4 years, The median age of males was 33.6 years, for females the median age was 38.8 years. The racial or ethnic makeup of the city was 6443 White, 21 Black or African American, 805 American Indian, 28 Asian, 3 Native Hawaiian, 195 from two or more races and 482 Ohter races.
