The county comprises an area of 2529.42 sq mi (6551.17 kmē), of which, 2472.93 square miles (6404.86 kmē) of it is land and 56.48 square miles (146.28 kmē) of it is water, it is the fifth largest in terms of geographical size. It is ranks seventh in the size of its inland waterways in South Dakota.
