As of July 2008, the estimated population was 7787, It is the 29th largest by population in the U.S. state of New Mexico. It covers total area of 11.25 miē (29.14 kmē), of which, 10.73 square miles (27.79 kmē) of it is land and 0.53 square miles (1.37 kmē) of it is water, makes it the 43rd largest by total area in New Mexico. It is ranks fifth in the size of its inland waterways in New Mexico.

As of the census of 2000, there were 7334 people in the city, organized into 457 households, and 284 families living in the city. The population density was 683.7 people per square mile (263.98/kmē), making its New Mexico's 69th most densely populated city.
