Coosa County is one of the 67 county of Alabama, located towards the Southern Region (East South Central) of United States. The county has a population of 12202 as per the 2000 census data. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 10814, giving it the fourth smallest population among Alabama's county. It is spread over 666.36 sq mi (1725.86 kmē), of which, 652.44 square miles (1689.81 kmē ) of it is land and 13.91 square miles (36.03 kmē) of it is water, makes it the 36th largest by total area in Alabama.

As of the census of 2000, there were 12202 residents, 4682 households, and 3407 families in the county. The population density was 18.7 people per square mile (7.22/kmē), making its Alabama's eighth least densely populated county. There were 6142 housing units at an average density of 9.4 per square mile (3.63/kmē). The average household size was 2.52 people, and the average family size was 2.98 people. In the county the population was spread out, with 23.7% under the age of 18, 8.6% from 18 to 24, 29% from 25 to 44, 24.3% from 45 to 64, and 14.4% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 104.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 102.5 males. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 10814, The racial makeup of the county was 67.48% White, 31.25% Black or African American, 0.37% American Indian, 0.06% Asian, 0.01% Native Hawaiian, and 0.84% from two or more races.
