Cook County is a United States county located in the United States of Minnesota. In 2000, the population was 5168. The July 2008 population estimate is 5437, making it the seventh least populous county in Minnesota. It has total area of 3339.72 sq mi (8649.84 square kilometre), of which, 1450.6 square miles (3757.04 square kilometre) of it is land and 1889.11 square miles (4892.77 square kilometre) of it is water, making it Minnesota's second largest county by total area. It is ranks first in the size of its inland waterways in Minnesota.

According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 5168 residents, 2350 households, and 1438 families in the county. The population density was 3.6 people per square mile (1.39/kmē), it is the second least densely populated county in the U.S. state of Minnesota. There were 4708 housing units at an average density of 3.2 per square mile (1.24/kmē). The average household size was 2.17 people, and the average family size was 2.73 people. In the county the population is diverse age-wise, with 20.4% under the age of 18, 5.4% from 18 to 24, 25.8% from 25 to 44, 31.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 99.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 98.5 males. The July 2008 population estimate is 5437, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 88.47% White, 0.28% Black or African American, 8.37% American Indian, 0.35% Asian, 0.04% Native Hawaiian, and 2.5% from two or more races.
