Cook County is one of the 102 county of Illinois, located towards the Midwestern Region (East North Central) of United States. In 2000, the population was 5376741. In July 2008, its estimated population was 5294664, It is Illinois's most populous county. It covers total area of 1635.04 sq mi (4234.73 square kilometre), of which, 945.68 square miles (2449.3 square kilometre) of it is land and 689.36 square miles (1785.43 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the largest in terms of geographical size. It is ranks second in the size of its inland waterways in Illinois.


As of the census of 2000, there were 5376741 people, 1974181 households, and 1269592 families residing in the county. The population density was 5685.6 people per square mile (2195.22/kmē), it is Illinois's most densely populated county. There were 2096121 housing units at an average density of 2216.5 per square mile (855.8/kmē). The average household size was 2.68 people, and the average family size was 3.38 people. In the county Age distribution was 26% under the age of 18, 9.9% from 18 to 24, 31.7% from 25 to 44, 20.7% from 45 to 64, and 11.7% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 93.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.5 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 5294664, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 66.77% White, 25.64% Black or African American, 0.42% American Indian, 5.83% Asian, 0.11% Native Hawaiian, and 1.22% from two or more races.

The median income for a household in the county was $45922, it is the 13th wealthiest county in terms of median household income. The median income for a family in the county was $53784, making it the 14th wealthiest county by median family income among the Illinois. The per capita income for the county was $23227, it is Illinois's seventh wealthiest county by per capita income.

In 2000, 1491276 pupils and students, of which 49.37% are male and 50.63% are female, 27.74% of the total population, are in the education system. Of which, percentage of enrollment student are in, 7.11% nursery or pri school, 5.61% kindergarten, 42.91% elementary school, 20.24% high school and 24.13% College graduate school.
