Contra Costa County is a county located in the United States of California. In 2000, the population was 948816. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 1029703, making it the ninth most populous county in California. It covers total area of 802.15 square miles (2077.56 sq km), of which, 719.95 square miles (1864.66 sq km) of it is land and 82.2 square miles (212.9 sq km) of it is water, making it California's ninth smallest county by total area.

As of the census of 2000, there were 948816 people, 344129 households, and 242233 families living in the county. The population density was 1317.9 people per square mile (508.84/kmē), it is sixth most densely populated county in California. There were 354577 housing units at an average density of 492.5 per square mile (190.16/kmē). The average household size was 2.72 and the average family size was 3.23. Age range in the county was well distributed with 26.5% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 30.6% from 25 to 44, 23.9% from 45 to 64, and 11.3% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 95.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.2 males. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 1029703, The racial makeup of the county was 738215 White, 99765 Black or African American, 8116 American Indian, 141131 Asian, 5210 Native Hawaiian, and 37266 from two or more races.
