Columbus County is a county located in the United States of North Carolina. In 2000, the population was 54749. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 54212, It is North Carolina's 49th most populous county. It is spread over 953.6 sq mi (2469.81 sq km), of which, 936.8 square miles (2426.3 sq km ) of it is land and 16.8 square miles (43.51 sq km) of it is water, makes it the sixth largest by total area in North Carolina.

The population's age distribution was 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 27.4% from 25 to 44, 24.4% from 45 to 64, and 13.8% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 92.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.4 males. In July 2008, its estimated population was 54212, The racial makeup of the county was 35216 White, 16529 Black or African American, 1825 American Indian, 151 Asian, 18 Native Hawaiian, and 473 from two or more races.
