Columbus City is a city located in Platte County, Nebraska, in the Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. The population of the city was 20971 as per the 2000 census data. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 21595, It is the tenth largest by population in the U.S. state of Nebraska. The city spans an area of 9.17 sq mi (23.75 square kilometre), of which, 8.97 square miles (23.23 square kilometre) of it is land and 0.19 square miles (0.49 square kilometre) of it is water, making it Nebraska's ninth largest by total area. It is ranks sixth in the size of its inland waterways in Nebraska.

As of the census of 2000, there were 20971 people in the city, organized into 8302 households, and 5562 families living in the city. The population density was 2337.3 people per square mile (902.44/kmē), it would be the 29th most densely populated city in the U.S. state of Nebraska. There were 8818 housing units at an average density of 983.1 per square mile (379.58/kmē). The average household size was 2.5 and the average family size was 3.09. In the city the population was distributed as follows: 28.2% under the age of 18, 8.4% from 18 to 24, 28% from 25 to 44, 20.8% from 45 to 64, and 14.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 94.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.3 males. The median age was 35.7 years, The median age of males was 34 years, for females the median age was 37.3 years. The racial or ethnic makeup of the city was 94.19% White, 0.45% Black or African American, 0.35% American Indian, 0.48% Asian, 0.04% Native Hawaiian, 1% from two or more races and 3.49% Other races.
