Columbia County is one of the 62 county of New York, located towards the Northeastern Region (Mid-Atlantic) of United States. According to the latest population census dating back to 2000, the Columbia County is home to 63094 inhabitants. The July 2008 population estimate is 62006, making it New York's 42nd largest county. Its area is just over 648.27 sq mi (1679.01 kmē), of which, 635.73 square miles (1646.53 kmē) of it is land and 12.54 square miles (32.48 kmē) of it is water, making it the 38th largest by size in New York.

The population density was 99.2 people per square mile (38.3/kmē), it is 39th most densely populated county in New York. There were 30207 housing units at an average density of 47.5 per square mile (18.34/kmē). The average household size was 2.43 people, and the average family size was 2.95 people. Age range in the county was well distributed with 24.1% under the age of 18, 6.4% from 18 to 24, 26.9% from 25 to 44, 26.3% from 45 to 64, and 16.4% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 99 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.3 males. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 62006, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 56871 White, 3125 Black or African American, 159 American Indian, 965 Asian, 20 Native Hawaiian, and 866 from two or more races.
