Columbia County is a United States county located in the United States of Florida. As of 2000 the population was 56513. Its population was estimated at 69092 in July 2008, It is the 40th most populous county in the U.S. state of Florida. It has total area of 801.04 square miles (2074.68 square kilometre), of which, 797.05 square miles (2064.35 square kilometre) of it is land and 3.99 square miles (10.33 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 37th largest in terms of geographical size.

As of the census of 2000, there were 56513 people in the county, organized into 20925 households, and 14919 families residing in the county. The population density was 70.9 people per square mile (27.37/kmē), making it the 42nd most densely populated county in Florida. There were 23579 housing units at an average density of 29.6 per square mile (11.43/kmē). The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.02. In the county the population was spread out, with 25.4% under the age of 18, 9% from 18 to 24, 27.7% from 25 to 44, 24% from 45 to 64, and 14% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 102.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 101.7 males. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 69092, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 79.76% White, 17.44% Black or African American, 0.54% American Indian, 0.8% Asian, 0.03% Native Hawaiian, and 1.42% from two or more races.
